Hunk of Meat Monday: Pineapple Pork Burgers

Grilled Pineapple Pork Burgers
I grew up loving a good pork burger. Now, as an adult I love playing around with the flavors that compliment pork. This grilled pineapple pork burger recipe gives an Asian inspired zip to my beloved pork burger.

The pork producers had the BEST pork burgers at the Iroquois County Fair. So good that they have their own seasoning salt they sell to all their adoring fans like me. When I moved to Indiana I was disappointed that our county fair at the time didn’t have a pork producers tent with pork burgers. I took matters into my own hands and requested ground pork with no sausage seasonings when we butchered our pigs the first year we were married. The ever skeptical husband is now also a lover of the mighty pork burger.

But back to the pork burger.

A pound of ground pork, chopped green onions, chopped garlic, teriyaki sauce, ginger powder, cumin, salt and pepper is all it takes. Now, you can add bread crumbs if you are worried about the burger binding together, but I rarely add binders to our pork.

You can make this mixture ahead and let the flavors meld together or go right into making patties. Let me be honest, I don’t plan that far in advance. Ever. I usually make three to four patties depending on my hunger.

And this day it was a third pound burger kind of day. I put three of my pineapple burgers and three traditional pork burgers. I was anticipating some push back from a few folks in my house. Or at least some hesitation to my flavor experiment.

When the burgers were flipped and nearing being done, I put the sliced pineapple on the grill. I wanted the pineapple to be a similar temperature to the burgers as well as getting some of the smokiness from the grill into the fruit.

After cooking the burgers and pineapple, remove from grill and start building your burgers. I used a regular bun, placed the pork burger and then topped with the the pineapple ring, diced green onions and teriyaki sauce.

Don’t have pork in your freezer from the pigs you raise? Ask your grocery store to grind a cut of pork for you. For leaner ground pork use pork loin. Pork shoulder or pork roasts would also work well too.
