King’s Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches
King’s Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches are always a hit all year long. If you are looking for a make-ahead dish to take to a potluck, these sandwiches also freeze well. Regardless, King’s Hawaiian Roll ham sandwiches are the perfect recipe made with a buttery poppy seed mustard sauce, ham, and swiss cheese on King’s rolls.

Don’t have access to an oven where you want to have these? No fear, check out the crock pot Hawaiian roll ham sandwich version too. Now, many of you have seen my freezer ham sammies, and I have the slider version for you this week at Hunk of Meat Monday.
What’s in Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches

The ingredients for the baked ham sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls are so simple. You can easily get the ingredients at Aldi’s even now that they have their own brand of Hawaiian Rolls. Here are the things you need to make these sandwiches:
- Hawaiian sweet rolls – these are more than just dinner rolls. You can also make these sandwiches on slider buns.
- onion – Sweet or white onions diced are what you need for this recipe.
- butter – the real stuff here. No margarine!
- Dijon Mustard – While I prefer Dijon mustard, standard yellow mustard can work too.
- Worcestershire sauce – there is no substitute for this in the mustard onion sauce. It just makes the sauce richer.
- poppy seeds – The poppy seeds are small black bead-like seeds. They are almost a dark purple or blue color.
- deli ham – shaved or thinly sliced ham is perfect for this recipe. A thick slice of ham can work too.
- Swiss cheese – White American Cheese will work fine too.
How to Make Ham Sandwiches with Onion Mustard Butter
Start by chopping or grating an onion. I use a food chopper. I get a pretty fine mince.

Melt a stick of butter and then add the onions.

Add three tablespoons of Dijon mustard to the onions and butter, stir together.

Then pour in two teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce.

Finally, add three teaspoons of poppy seeds and simmer until onions are soft.

Grab a package of Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls and cut the entire package in half length wise as one large piece.

Place the roll bottoms on an aluminum foil-lined 13 by 9 pan. Spread the onion mixture on the entire bottom. You will want to save about 1/4 of the mixture back.

Grab some shaved hams, about a half a pound, and seven to eight slices of swiss cheese. Put the ham on top of the onions and then add the slices of cheese.

Add the roll tops after the cheese.

If you have any onion mixture left, spread it over top of the rolls.

Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate until ready to use. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, covered with foil.

When you remove from the oven, slice down the roll lines. Hawaiian Roll ham and cheese sandwiches will bring the family out in a hurry when they smell them come out of the oven.

The mustard butter keeps the bread moist while adding savory flavor. The poppy seeds provide little bursts of nutty crunch in each bite. While ham and Swiss are classic, you could also substitute other cheeses like cheddar or provolone. Leftover mustard butter is great for spreading on breads and rolls for any type of sandwich.
Variations of Hawaiian Roll Ham Sandwiches
Switch up the flavors with the ham sandwiches. Here are some variations of ham sandwiches you can make on these perfectly sized Hawaiian rolls.
- BBQ Ham – Top ham with cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, and crispy fried onions.
- Ham and Apple – Use sliced green apples, havarti cheese, and honey mustard.
- Italian Ham – Make it Italian-style with ham, provolone, tomato, basil leaves, and balsamic vinaigrette.
- Hawaiian Ham – Go tropical with ham, pineapple slices, pepper jack cheese, and teriyaki sauce.
- Cuban Ham – Layer ham, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and yellow mustard.
- Ham Caprese – Use mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and balsamic drizzle for a caprese vibe.
If you are looking for other meat options besides ham, we have ideas for you there too.
- Reuben – Make a lighter version with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing.
- Roast Beef – Top slices of tender roast beef with havarti cheese and onions with a Worcestershire sauce. Checkout the roast beef sandwich recipe.
- Tuna Melt – Mix tuna salad with melted cheddar or Swiss cheese for comfort food.
- Veggie – Load up grilled veggies like zucchini, eggplant, peppers, spinach and feta or goat cheese.
- Chicken Parmesan – Breaded chicken cutlet, tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil.
- Cheesesteak – Use leftover Italian beef, grilled onions & peppers, provolone or a white cheese sauce. This is a popular recipe on Beyer Eats and Drinks.
- French Dip – Crock Pot roast beef with lots of onions and French Onion soup is perfect on Hawaiian Rolls and topped with melty Swiss with au jus dipping sauce.

I made these sandwiches for my housewarming party and they were a huge hit. So many people asked for the recipe. It was so simple. I will definitely add to my list of go to potluck recipes.

I am going to be making 150 of these for a wedding, and was wondering if making them the night before and putting in refrigerator overnight if they would get soggy?
Go for it! I make them ahead and freeze them even!!
I am so happy I found this recipe. It is a total favorite with everyone around here. My son does not like onions but it still works. I just cut the sauce recipe in 3rds and he gets his without the onions. So everyone is happy. Yay!!!!!
I’ve made these four times since finding your recipe and they’re always a hit. And I’ve recently become obsessed with these Hawaiian rolls so I used them for pretty much any hot sandwich I make now. Thanks for the recipe!
I love this recipe and these sandwiches are SO good, but I have a problem with the onion/butter mixture not getting anywhere close to as smooth as yours. I used Grey Poupon from the fridge, but I’ve also tried it at room temperature, and the mustard NEVER mixes fully with the butter/onions. What kind of butter and mustard do you use?
Hi, I’m just breaking in to the cooking and blogging world and wanted to let you know I tried your recipe. My husband and I loved it, and I posted about it on Nermal & Friends (http://nermalandfriends.blogspot.com/2013/02/my-first-5-out-of-5.html).
Thanks for the recipe!

I’m one of the few that did not like them either. Disappointed, but thank you for sharing. Husband did not like them either, and we are not picky eaters.
Oh my gosh… this looks like HEAVEN… will be doing this for Christmas Day! Thanks for Sharing
I saw this recipe on Food network last week. Homemade in America. Some lady in Oklahoma is making a lot of money selling these.
No such thing as Hawiian rolls where I live, would Irish potato rolls be similar?
Will these be ok if I make them the night before?
I know I’m the lucky millionth person to say this, but these were FABULOUS and the whole family swooned over them (even my picky 7 year old!) Thank you for a keeper!! ๐
I bet they would be great for camping as well. Make ahead, keep in the foil warm up, tada lunch!
Found on Pinterest!
These look and sound SO good. I’d use provolone, probably. I’ll bet they freeze well … easy make-ahead dish for parties or the holidays.
I’m reading this post basketball season… however, I think with these treats, you would make a great Hoosier! ๐
I have made the Poppyseed and ham and cheese sandwiches two times, plus I have a pan in the refrigerator waiting for my family to arrive from Maryland !!! They are to die for !! Thanks

Hi Leah, I found this recipe on Pinterest. I have made these sandwiches twice now. This is a new favorite at our house! I followed your recipe except I didn’t use the poppyseeds. Thank you so much for sharing! There are amazing!!
Found these on Pinterest, and they are currently in the oven…they smell HEAVENLY! And they were super fast to make too. Love my Pampered Chef chopper as well! ๐ Thank you!
i found your blog via pinterest. i'm now making these for the 2nd time in a week. i've made a lot of recipes over the last year that i've "pinned" but my hubby and kids say this one is the BEST!
Can't stop making these! I swear that I have made these at least 5 times since I pinned them. Yummy!!
those look amazing!! i can't wait to try them. fyi–be careful of the surface you use for your food chopper. you want a cutting board that will show knife/cut marks otherwise, you may dull the blades! =)
Pinned these to my pinterest account a few weeks back. Made them today for family. they were a hit we ate the whole thing. thank you!
pllbbbth
My friend made these for Superbowl…. AMAZING and the next day….. STUPENDOUS!
Don't like onions.. what else can be used?
I really love this recipe, although I had a hard time making it healthy without sacrificing taste. The only thing I changed though was I used Dijon Mustard with Chardonnay (yum!!), deli turkey and a round hawaiian loaf, which actually turned out great because it came with it's own disposable pan! Will TOTALLY try this again! Thanks!
