Anybody else have some leftover ham in the fridge? I know there is plenty of turkey out there but what about ham?
I have weak spot for any food that mixes the savory and sweet flavors, so I instantly thought Monte Cristo when I looked at my bag of leftover ham and loaf of French bread. I came up with my own method for making this sandwich without deep frying it.
I started by making a batch of French toast mix. I had a little helper with this recipe. Anytime there are eggs involved, I have lots of little volunteers to crack eggs.
Start by mixing:
1/2 cup of milk
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla
I submerge 8-10 pieces of bread in the egg mixture.
Put in a hot, buttered skillet for 2-3 minutes on each side. When toast is done, kill the heat and put a few pieces of ham in the skillet to warm up. Remove ham when it is heated through.
Place bread back in the skillet and layer cheese (I used Provolone in mine), ham, cheese and top with another piece of French Toast.
The heat remaining in the skillet will be enough to melt cheese without burning the bread.
Then it is time for some powdered sugar.
There just can’t be enough said about this sandwich. Love.
