What is Monkey Bread?
Monkey Bread is a type of pull-apart bread that’s made by baking small dough pieces coated in sugar, cinnamon, and butter. It’s traditionally baked in a bundt pan, which gives it its iconic shape, and it's typically served as a breakfast or dessert dish. The dough becomes caramelized during baking, resulting in a sweet, sticky treat that pulls apart easily, perfect for sharing.
Caramel Pull-Apart Bread Ingredients
Are you drooling now? As long as you have two cans of Grands biscuits, you will easily be able to make this monkey bread. Lots of sugar and butter naturally makes this all come together in a delicious caramelly way.
To make caramel pull-apart bread, gather these ingredients:
- Pillsbury Grands refrigerator biscuits - These are the large biscuits that come 8 biscuits to a can.
- Butter - Real butter is a staple in this recipe. No imitation of the real butter will work. Salted butter will work just fine.
- Heavy whipping cream - Fat is flavor, so I go with the heavy whipping cream. However, half and half cream can also work in this monkey bread recipe.
- Brown sugar - Light brown sugar is the go-to sugar for this recipe. However, if you have only dark brown sugar on hand, you can use that too.
- White sugar - Simple white sugar is key for anything that is coated in cinnamon and sugar.
- Cinnamon - Your favorite cinnamon is fine for this recipe.
- Pinch of salt - Table salt will work just fine. Or sea salt works too.
How to Make Monkey Bread
So, this monkey bread recipe is the easiest thing to make. The hard part, waiting for them to bake. Start by grabbing two cans of the large biscuits. Then cut each piece of biscuit dough into quarters.
A kid can even do it with a pair of scissors! So, while my little helper was cutting biscuits, I started on the caramel sauce by melting one stick of butter in a small saucepan then add ยฝ cup of brown sugar and heavy whipping cream.
I am becoming obsessed with salted caramels, so of course, I tossed a little sea salt into the mixture.
By this time, the biscuits were all cut into quarters. We grabbed a gallon size Ziploc bag and poured 1 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon into the bag.
We then put about half of the cut biscuits into the sugar and cinnamon, sealed the bag and shook it all up.
The quartered pieces of biscuit dough should be coated in the cinnamon and sugar.
Then grease a bundt pan and poured โ of the caramel sauce I had made into the bottom of the pan. Next, transfer the biscuits from the cinnamon and sugar to the pan. We sprinkled a little of the sugar mixture over top of the biscuits and poured half of the remaining caramel sauce over the biscuits. Then repeat with the remaining biscuits and caramel sauce.
The biscuits will almost appear to be drowning in the caramel sauce. The monkey bread ready for the oven now. Bake the monkey bread at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes.
Take it out of the oven and let it sit for 2-3 minutes before flipping onto a serving platter.
This Caramel Monkey Bread recipe is a fantastic, family-friendly dish that will become a staple in your breakfast or dessert lineup. With its rich, buttery flavor and sticky caramel coating, it's hard to resist taking another piece. Plus, it's easy enough to make any day of the week!
Variations
- Glazed Monkey Bread: Drizzle a simple icing made from powdered sugar and milk over the warm monkey bread for added sweetness.

Tips for Success
Customize: Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the layers for added crunch. You can also drizzle a cream cheese glaze over the top for a decadent twist.
